Defined Brow
This look isn’t like the Brooke Shields
eyebrow (the bushy, full brow). Your
brows should be defined, clean and natural.
Eyebrows act as a frame for your
face and eyes, so you’ll want to put some
work into defining them. You may want
to try one of the eyebrow kits on the
market, or go to a good salon and have
a professional shape them.
When applying makeup, use a soft
pencil or eyebrow cake to create definition.
If you have blonde to light brown
hair, look for a color one to two shades
darker than your hair. Those with medium
brown to verydark hair should
choose a shade lighter, or one that
matches their hair color. Finish with a
clear brow gel to keep the eyebrow hairs
in place.
When you define your brows and eyes,
go with a neutral, soft look for the lips.
Smoky Eye/Kohl-rimmed Eye
This is the most popular look seen on
fall’s ready-to-wear runways. Eyes are “the windows to the soul” and the feature
most people say they find most attractive.
This look is by far the most flattering,
and is wearable for the majority
of women. Heavily lined eyes may not be
right for you (or appropriate for everyday
wear), and when not done properly,
they can make you appear as though
you’re wearing too much makeup; however,
the smoky eye, if well done, will
look modern and feminine on just about
everyone. Opt for a softer look in the
daytime, and go dramatic for evening.
Just remember, less is more.
To get the smoky look, try these techniques.
Monochromatic beauty statement: Start with a neutral face and soft lip.
Apply a highlight to the brow bone area
and the inner corner of the eye with a
pale, shimmery shadow in beige, silver
or pink. Apply a dark shadow (in the
same tone as the light color you chose),
and line the eyes, top and bottom,
with liner. With a small brush, smudge
the liner and blend so it’s soft and
flattering. Finally, finish with lots of
black mascara, separating lashes between
layers.
Dramatic smoky statement: For a
darker, more dramatic, smoldering and
sultry look, use the same technique, but
layer your dark shadow and blend your
liner outwards into the shadow. Finish
with mascara.
Nude/Neutral Face
This is the perfect look to complement
the dramatic statements made by this
season’s structural clothes and that perfect
color of lipstick. You won’t have to
worry about your face conflicting with
what you’re wearing.
The nude face is all about good skin
and flawless coverage. Use a cleanser,
toner, moisturizer, exfoliate and primer
before you touch your face with makeup.
Next, make sure your skin looks flawless.
Prepare it like a canvas for a painting.
Find a foundation with goodcoverage,
but let your skin show through.
Classic Red Lips
There’s nothing like this classic look.
It remains timeless and flattering, and
no matter what your skin tone, there’s
a shade of red lipstick to suit you. If
you have light to fair skin, you probably
have a bluish undertone, so choose a red
that has a blue or pink base. If your skin
is darker or has an olive tone, opt for a
red with an orange base or a true, bright
red.
Make sure you take extra care when
you’re wearing this look. Red is a strong
color, so be sure your lips are exfoliated
and ready for the attention. Use a lip liner
that matches your lipstick as closely
as possible. For those wishing to get the
classic look, finish off with a matte lipstick,
or if you prefer, layer on lip gloss.
Beauty Tips, Inside and Out
Great makeup is just the start of a
beautiful look. The perfect face can be
ruined by not taking care of your spirit.
To optimize your beauty, take some
time to consider what’s going on inside
your heart and soul.
Take care of your entire body, making
sure to eat healthy and get regular exercise.
When you invest in your overall
health, you make yourself look younger
and more attractive.
Follow up on good makeup with a
great hairstyle (go to the salon and try
something new), manicured nails, professionally
shaped brows, and treat your
skin to some pampering. Summer’s heat
takes its toll on hair and skin, so don’t
shy away from a rejuvenating facial and
a good deep conditioning treatment for
your hair. Th e looks this fall are so clean
and defi ned they demand nothing less
than perfection in your entire grooming
routine.
If your body, mind and spirit are in
order, enhancing the outward woman
becomes rewarding and fun.
BEAUTY Q & A
by TRUDI HAUGEN
Q: I have a serious problem with puffiness
under my eyes. What can I do to hide it?
A: The best rule is to avoid accenting the puffi ness. Clearly, you do not want to draw
attention to this area. Keep in mind, less is more. You want to avoid lining under
your eyes, and don’t use too light of a concealer, as it will accent the problem. Rather, try
to draw attention to your upper eye area, lids and brow. You can also use a pretty blush to
accent the cheeks.
Q: When do I apply concealer –
before or after my foundation?
A: It is best to apply your concealer first. Sometimes that is all you
will need. Make sure you don’t apply your foundation on top of concealer,
unless your concealer is a corrective one. When I say “corrective,”
I am referring to one that may have a more yellow or peach tone. Your concealer
needs to be lighter than your foundation and face shade. If you apply
foundation on top of concealer, it will cancel out the lightening effect.
Q: I have a lot of redness and blotchiness on
my face. Is there anything I can do for it?
A: Use skincare products that are gentle and for sensitive skin. Th ere are some that
are formulated to calm the redness. Try adding a tint of green to your foundation or
powder. It will help to cancel out the red.
